“The place of true healing is a fierce place. It’s a giant place. It’s a place of monstrous beauty and endless dark and glimmering light. And you have to work really, really, really hard to get there, but you can do it.”
~ Cheryl Strayed
THE PAST is STILL SPEAKING
The Mockingbird Patreon community creates a brave space to heal from the grievous parts of our country’s history and our familial stories within that history. The effects of this unavoidable and distressing history have left us bruised with false ideologies, implicit and explicit biases, as well as ensnared in a barrage of unrelenting public discourse in our culture. And the evidence of those bruises often manifest in feelings of denial, confusion, fear of knowing, shame and hopelessness.
How do we heal this inner history? We start from the inside out. We begin with our own stories. And the first sentence of each of our stories needs to be a statement of recognition that we are the descendants of a flawed nation of people who were colonizers, enslavers, insurrectionists, misogynists, captors, gatekeepers, segregationists and supremacists – but who were also rebels, protesters, idealists, dreamers, freedom seekers, abolitionists, suffragettes, peacemakers, and uniters. Only when we begin to recognize the light and shadow within each of us can we begin to heal by unearthing the buried and untold stories beneath our history, seeing each other as co-heirs of a dark past regardless of our divisions, and by staying connected to our ancestors’ stories and the stories we are sowing now.
Every other Sunday, Mockingbird will harvest those stories and crossbreed them into our own hurts and concerns and dreams and passions. Every Mockingbird lessons encounters history with vulnerability, authenticity, courage, dignity, compassion and wonder. By marrying beloved classic books, movies, music and videos to the major discourses of our time, our objective for learning history is:
1
To Hold Space and Understand Other Perspectives
2
To Expose and Dismantle Supremacy and Oppression
3
To Connect with Others Past and Present
4
To Center Silenced Stories
5
To Eliminate Shame
